A Story
The flowers had been changing almost without notice. At first there were only a few deeper petals among the pale ones, and then the burgundy appeared—plum beside rose, apricot beside gold, leaves beginning to bronze at their edges while the dahlias seemed determined to become more extravagant with every passing day.
She brought a handful inside and set them where the afternoon light could find them. Nothing about the room had changed, and yet the color altered everything. The table looked warmer. The walls softer. Even the ordinary hour between afternoon and evening seemed to have acquired a little more depth.

A Story
The room was brightest in the late afternoon.
By then, the sun had crossed the water and found its way through the tall open doors, turning everything it touched slightly golden—the glass bottles on the table, the flowers near the window, the folds of her dress, even the pale floor beneath her feet.
She had come into the room looking for nothing in particular.
Perhaps that was why she noticed so much.
A sailboat moving slowly across the water. The flowers warming in the sun. A bottle she had nearly forgotten on the dressing table. The way the curtains lifted when the breeze reached them.
Her journal was nearby.

THE COLOR DEEPENS
Late summer, touched by autumn.
The garden does not end all at once.
It deepens.
Peach becomes apricot. Pink turns rose. Burgundy arrives like velvet. The light still lingers, but it has softened—warmer at the edges, quieter by evening.
This is the season of dahlias.
Their colors seem richer now against the fading greens of summer: deep wine, dusty rose, burnished peach. Hummingbirds still move through the garden. Wildflowers remain. The days are warm enough to belong to summer, even as the evenings begin asking for candlelight.
There is no need to name the next season too soon.
For a little while longer, we can stay here—in the fullness between bright summer and true autumn. We can notice the colors becoming more saturated, the shadows stretching farther across the room, the first coolness arriving after sunset.
Some transitions announce themselves.
Others simply change the color of things.
So gather what is still blooming. Bring the dahlias inside. Light the candle a little earlier. Let peach become apricot and pink become rose.

This is the part of the season I like most—the in-between.
Nothing needs to be rushed forward.
We can notice what is here now: blue beside orange, warm afternoons, cooler nights, flowers still reaching toward the light.
The season will change when it changes.
For today, there is still enough summer to gather.

LATE AUGUST
There is no need to hurry the season forward.
Late August has its own particular abundance. Summer is still fully here, but it has begun to carry itself differently. The nights are a little cooler, the light has softened around the edges, and outside the window the colors seem almost determined to make the most of what remains.
Blue and orange wildflowers move through the grasses. Sunflowers have begun to bloom. Hummingbirds still dart through the garden with the same impossible speed, unconcerned with the calendar. There is nothing tentative about the season yet. It is warm, vivid and very much alive.
Perhaps this is the pleasure of paying attention to an ordinary day rather than constantly anticipating the next one. We do not have to turn late August into autumn before it is ready. There will be time for deeper colors, sweaters, fires and shorter afternoons. Today gives us something else.
It gives us blue sky against sunflower gold. Warm air through an open window. A little orange among the grasses. Long daylight with cooler edges. Flowers that belong exactly to this moment and will not look quite the same a few weeks from now.
A composed life is not only about making things beautiful. It is also about recognizing what is already here and allowing it to have its season.
There is no need to hurry this one.
